Orchard View

Learning Disability Service

Service Overview

Orchard is a residential home for people living with a learning disability. The home provides an environment in which individuals are able to hone their skill set, enhance independence and well-being as well as provide them with the ability to step down to the final part of their chosen care pathway into community living.

Admission Criteria

Orchard supports:

  • Males or females aged 18 yrs + who have a diagnosis of a learning disability.
  • Support underlying challenging behaviours.
  • Prior to the initial 12 week assessment period a ‘compatibility’ assessment is carried out to make sure that residents can be supported to live well together.
The Support Delivered

Through the support of a motivated and experienced staff team, individuals are encouraged to develop their social and adaptive skills to maintain and gain further independence and offer opportunities to enhance the person’s quality of life.

Planned activities, both in the community and in- house, promote choice, decision making and social interaction. These may include quiz nights, pamper evenings, film nights and arts and crafts.
Residents also have access to the ‘Highfield Hub’ which is the active support centre. Here residents can engage in social and recreational activities with other residents as well as more formal based teaching in qualifications to facilitate learning and education. These are based on active support models in conjunction with the National Open College Network (NOCN) to support resident’s to achieve formal qualifications which they can use in the community and develop through college or further education.

By enabling staff to understand the function of risk behaviours this enables plans to be implemented to safely manage potential risks and to provide the least restrictive support in an inclusive and empowering way.
